Hypnotherapy
What is Hypnotherapy — and how can it help?
Most of what drives us are unconscious patterns. If you’ve been struggling with a phobia, anxiety, a habit or addiction, you will be consciously aware of what changes you want to make, but it can seem impossible to actually make them.
This is where hypnotherapy can gently support you.
A gentle, natural state
Hypnotherapy is often misunderstood. It’s not about being controlled, “put under,” or losing awareness. You are always in control.
In reality, it’s a natural, relaxed state of focused attention — something you already experience in everyday life (like when you’re absorbed in a book or lost in thought).
In this state, your mind becomes calmer, your body feels safer, and we can begin to access the deeper patterns that are driving your symptoms.
Gently working with the subconscious mind
Hypnotherapy allows us to access the subconscious mind — the part of you that holds your past experiences, patterns, and learned responses.
In everyday life, we’re mostly aware of our conscious thoughts.
But underneath that is a much deeper layer — often described as the “iceberg” — where many of our automatic reactions and behaviours are shaped.
This is where lasting change can begin.
Understanding why these patterns exist
Many of the patterns you experience — even the ones that feel frustrating or limiting — developed for a reason.
They were your mind and body’s way of keeping you safe.
For example:
A phobia can form when your nervous system has linked something to danger, even if that threat is no longer present
Anxiety or hypervigilance may have developed to help you anticipate and avoid difficult situations
Addictive behaviours can be your system’s way of coping with or escaping overwhelming emotions
Negative thought patterns may have been learned early in life to help you stay alert or protected in your environment
These responses are not flaws.
They are intelligent adaptations — created by your nervous system to help you cope at the time.
Creating change with understanding and compassion
The challenge is that these patterns can continue long after they are needed.
Through hypnotherapy, we can begin to gently update these responses. Not by forcing change or “getting rid” of parts of you - but by helping your mind and body feel safe enough to let go of what it no longer needs.
This is how deeper, more lasting change becomes possible.
